Pragmatics

Some students think that learning pragmatics and learning syntax are mirror images of one another, because pragmatic data consist of everyday utterances. The first impression of pragmatics tend to be that it is easy. But the underlying ideas in pragmatics are really difficult. Consider the following example!

P: What’s your name by the way

S: Stephen

P: You haven’t asked my name back

S: What’s your name

P: It’s Pat
