Computational Approaches to Morphology and Syntax

Computational approaches to morphology and syntax are generally concerned with formal devices, such as grammars and stochastic models, and algorithms, such as tagging or parsing. They can range from primarily theoretical work, looking at, say, the computational complexity of algorithms for using a certain class of grammars, to mainly applied work, such as establishing best practices for statistical language modeling in the context of automatic speech recognition. Our intention in this volume is to provide a critical overview of the key computational issues in these domains along with some (though certainly not all) of the most effective approaches taken to address these issues.
