The Linguistics Encyclopedia


As the present encyclopedia shows, linguistics today encompasses a wide range of component disciplines and associated activities, all of which use the name to announce their commitment to the serious study of language and languages. This (relatively recent) expansion of linguistics means we need to focus on the core of the subject and how it emerged from its nineteenth-century origins as ‘the science of language’, a phrase which is still taken as a gloss on modern linguistics though not all linguists find it equally congenial.
